Camera issues

If Kvipp is unable to scan QR codes or recognise equipment using AI, the most common cause is that the wrong camera has been selected. This is especially common on Android phones.

Android phones often have many cameras — main rear camera, ultrawide, telephoto, depth sensor, infrared, and front-facing camera. Kvipp tries to automatically select the best camera for scanning and image recognition, but camera names and labels vary widely between manufacturers and phone languages.

Kvipp selects the best camera by:

  • filtering out unusable sensors such as depth, infrared, and macro
  • looking for the rear main camera with the highest resolution and autofocus
  • falling back to testing cameras directly if the labels don’t provide enough information

While this works well in most cases, Kvipp may occasionally pick the wrong camera — particularly on phones with an unusual camera setup or a phone language we don’t fully support yet.

Inside the Kvipp camera view, there is a dropdown where you can choose between available cameras. Try selecting a different camera if:

  • the image is black or blurry
  • QR codes are not being recognised
  • AI recognition is not working as expected

Look for a camera with a name containing words like “back”, “rear”, or “main” — this is usually the primary camera.

If the camera does not start at all, Kvipp may not have permission to use your camera.

  • Android: Go to Settings → Apps → the browser you are using (e.g. Chrome) → Permissions → Camera, and make sure access is allowed.
  • iOS: Go to Settings → the browser you are using → Camera, and enable access.

After granting permission, reload the page and try again.

On Android, Kvipp works best in Chrome. Some other browsers have limited camera access and may experience issues.

4. Keep the camera steady and in good light

Section titled “4. Keep the camera steady and in good light”

For best results when scanning QR codes or using AI recognition:

  • hold your phone steady
  • make sure there is good lighting — avoid strong backlighting
  • hold the camera 15–30 cm from the QR code or equipment label
